We=20 used a king-size ComfortAire for about 14 years until we graduated to a=20 Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattress. That was several times longer than = any other=20 mattress (waterbeds) had worked for us.

 

Our=20 reasons for switching were probably not enough to really justify the = cost of the=20 switch.... but I was curious and a little less satisfied with the = ComfortAire=20 than Merrily.  I am 6' 2" = and close=20 to 300 lbs. Merrily is 5' 2" and weighs a whole heck of a lot less.

 

On=20 the ComfortAire we were always "dicking" with our controls because I = like / need=20 it pretty firm (low back problems). She does not like anything but soft. = The=20 problem was that pumping mine up also pushed the divider into her = "space" and=20 made hers harder. She would soften hers and mine would get softer, ergo, = the=20 "dicking" with the controls.

 

Also,=20 changes in room/ mattress temperature caused changes in pressure = (naturally),=20 thus, more "dicking" with the controls.

 

A=20 Tempur-Pedic has no controls and the trial period I felt was long enough = and=20 liberal enough (I can't believe I used that word in a positive = statement), that=20 I was sure we could test it and return it if it was not ok.

 

But,=20 lets face it, I am not good at returning things even when they are = completely=20 broken. Trying to decide if the Tempur-Pedic was good enough or not was = even=20 more difficult and I am still trying to decide 3 1/2 years later.... so = much for=20 getting my money back.

 

The=20 good news is that we still love the Tempur-Pedic even more than the = ComfortAire,=20 probably because she does not wake up in the middle of the night laying = across a=20 camel's hump and I don't wake up with the wooden platform digging into = my hip=20 bone.

 

The=20 bad news is that the Tempur-Pedic weighs more than a Simmons = BeautyRest.  In a king sized bed, this = really does=20 help keep the sheets on but put on your weight lifting belt if you have = to move=20 it around on the frame at all.

 

Over=20 the years another thing we have seen in this progression from Beautyrest = to=20 Sealy to Serta to waterbeds to CraftMatic adjustible bed (yep, we even = tried one=20 of those) to Comfortaire and finally to Tempur-Pedic is that waterbeds = and air=20 beds get cold or hot(waterbeds) on my "down" side. One might think that = this=20 would be a good thing if the temperature was matched to the time of the = year but=20 it actually makes being "comfortable" all night almost impossible. Leg = cramps,=20 stiff muscles, hot and cold sweats seem to be part of that territory and = we were=20 never able to reach stasis on any of these mattresses. However, this has = not=20 been a problem with the Tempur-Pedic.

 

I=20 know this answer has gone the long way around (as usual) but it really = needed=20 some qualification.

 

For=20 us the Tempur-Pedic is perfect, maybe more so than the Comfortaire that = we had=20 but maybe not so much more so than the current models available today. = Once the=20 Tempur-Pedic is fully broken in (which may take a year or more) it = really does=20 what it says and I often wake up 3 hours or more in the same position I = went to=20 sleep in. That would have been great when I was 30 but at 61 it can take = me a=20 few grunts and groans to get mobile enough to go to the bathroom = (usually the=20 only reason I wake up during most nights, anyway). It is also much = kinder to the=20 joints and appendages that want to fall asleep on their own. Like a = waterbed I=20 can sleep on my side with my arm over my head or elbow tucked to my side = under=20 me and not dream of amputations.

 

The=20 down side of the Tempur-Pedic may be the weight ( and the smell until it = breaks=20 in). In most 5vers, the mattress needs to be lifted to access the under = bed=20 storage. Certainly more powerful lifters are needed than for a regular = mattress=20 and I don't know if this is even a possibility with a waterbed mattress = on top=20 of it even if it has an air frame around it.

 

A=20 big plus of the Select Comfort mattresses is that they are a light = weight. Some=20 lifters might toss the mattress into the air when it is lifted a = little.  Have to ask someone that has = one on a=20 lift-bed platform about that.

 

The=20 mattress in our 5ver is a very good quality and a very firm mattress = that=20 neither of us can sleep on in any one position for long hours. Even = after=20 sleeping every night for 2 months on it, I was not able to avoid a fair = amount=20 of tossing and turning, fingers falling asleep, stiffness and general = "unrested"=20 nights. It will be replaced with either a Tempur-pedic (with stronger = lifters)=20 or a Select Comfort type mattress as soon as we decide (read that as = agree) on=20 one.

 

Our=20 youngest son, 21 years old and my height but only about 250lbs, sleeps = on our=20 old Comfort Aire except when we are out of town, then he sneaks into our = bedroom=20 to sleep. He greatly prefers the Tempur-Pedic to the Comfortaire = mattress (but=20 he sleeps alone).

 

What=20 can I say=E2=80=A6. I am picky.. My wife is picky=E2=80=A6 my kids are = picky=E2=80=A6 If we all like the=20 same thing, it must be really good=E2=80=A6 and never inexpensive.
